Hi,
I work as a professional Maya artist. And I use Z-brush.
I see Zbrush as a complementary software to Maya. For example, I model my model with correct topology in Maya, then at a later stage I go into Zbrush to do the normalmaps or texturing. Painting in vains or whatever..you get the point.
Learn Maya, it will give you a huge advantage to someone that just knows Z-brush. If you look at http://www.mayamodeling.com you can see that they have a whole section about Zebrush with free tutorials on how to model Wolverine. And also if you want help with Maya and Z-brush I answer questions in the forum at Mayamodeling.com So my advice to you, is learn Maya and Zbrush. Another software I use a lot is mudbox, If you like z-brush you will love mudbox.
See you in the forum at http://www.mayamodeling.com

All the best,
